Plot Synopsis

In 1636, King Injo sought refuge in a mountain fortress to escape the invading forces of Qing China. The dark days in the fortress, which are recorded in Kim Hoon's 2007 best-selling novel Namhansanseong, are brought to the big screen in Miss Granny director Hwang Dong Hyuk's period drama The Fortress. The historical blockbuster swept multiple awards at the 37th Korean Association of Film Critics Awards, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Music. The Fortress features the all-star cast of Lee Byung Hun (Master), Kim Yoon Seok (1987: When the Day Comes), Park Hae Il (The Last Princess), Ko Su (The Tooth and the Nail) and Park Hee Soon (V.I.P.). Heo Sung Tae (The Outlaws), Shin Ki Joon (Memoir of a Murderer), Jo Woo Jin (Steel Rain) and Lee David (Unforgettable) appear in supporting roles.

Led by General Yong Gol Dae (Heo Sung Tae), the Qing army takes over Joseon Korea and quickly surrounds the Namhan Fortress, the only remaining shelter for King Injo (Park Hae Il) and the imperial court. The King is required to hand over the Crown Prince (Shin Ki Joon) as hostage to save his people. Interior Minister Choi Myung Kil (Lee Byung Hun) agrees to negotiate with the enemies, but Minister of Rites Kang Sang Hun (Kim Yoon Seok) argues to fight to the death.
